GC Miracle hosts first event, raises funds

Georgia College Miracle, a division of the Children’s Miracle Network, recently hosted its first “Do Something Now for the Kids” event in Milledgeville on Oct. 27. This event consisted of an exhibit being placed between the two doors of the College of Arts & Sciences facing the library: three wooden fences, window frames, a vintage-style door, various pieces of medical equipment and many photographs of children whose lives have been influenced by the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in Macon.

After walking through this exhibit, those who entered between the fences to witness the set-up were given the chance to sign up for the Georgia College Miracle event, “Dance Marathon,” taking place in the spring.

Stephanie Reagan, junior mass communication major and the public relations chair of the Georgia College Miracle executive board, got involved with the organization when she was just a freshman.

She attended the “Dance Marathon” event and immediately decided to pick up an application to get more involved with the cause.

“It was an unforgettable experience and there is nothing like it on campus. I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of it,” Reagan said.

The annual “Dance Marathon” event, which has been held for eight years now, involves a 12-hour marathon in the Magnolia Ballroom, from noon until midnight on Feb. 4.

During this time, Georgia College Miracle will be raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital of Macon and families will come and speak about their experience with the hospital. This event seeks to raise awareness for the foundation and encourages people to get involved with the organization.

“Georgia College Miracle is such an eye opening experience for everyone who gets involved. It’s not just asking people for their money to give to a philanthropy, but it’s actually seeing what you are contributing to,” junior marketing major Bri Arnold said in a press release.

Georgia College Miracle is the largest fundraiser on campus and has collectively raised over $100,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in Macon.

The money raised has gone towards the expansion process of the Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, building the “HOPE (Hematology Oncology Place of Excellence) for Kids,” for the purchase of new medical equipment, and the expansion of the Pediatric Critical Care Unit.

“I think that Georgia College Miracle is a great way for people to both raise money for a good cause and have a lot of fun while they do it,” junior art major Victoria Head said. “It’s awesome to hear that our school has a fundraiser like this on campus that has done so well.”
