Out and About
Weekends away from the downtown scene
Historical Milledgeville, home to Georgia College, hundreds of unique buildings and landmarks and a community that thrives off of unity and individuality, is sadly being constrained through the eyes of so many of its students. This complex city is only seen as having one main attraction: downtown. Although The Velvet Elvis, Kuroshima and Capital City contribute to our quirky and unique home away from home, these city limits in fact contain an unlimited amount of reasonably- priced opportunities if you are open to a little creativity.
Mealtime is a favorite part of the day for the average college student, and Milledgeville offers an abundant amount of options. Several off-campus restaurants, including Chili’s, Mellow Mushroom and Sonic, allow you to socialize as well as venture away from the downtown area. However, our hard-earned cash does not necessarily have to be spent at a local restaurant. When asked what her most recent Saturday night consisted of, sophomore Lauren Phillips described her night with close friends. “We made a steak dinner at The Bellamy and watched a movie,” she said. Currently, Kroger is offering a $4.99 deal for individual New York Strips. In addition to these, the family size frozen dinner aisle is always accessible if you and your roommates are in need of a quick, home-cooked meal.
Maybe the idea of staying indoors is not as appealing for these last few weeks of summer weather. The Oconee River Greenway allows students to connect in a more natural setting. If you do not own a big enough blanket for a picnic, tables are scattered near the river solely for the community’s enjoyment. Not hungry? Go running around “the pit” or West Campus. Also, intramural sports are offered seasonally and are a great and interactive way to spend your evenings. Not only does West Campus offer sports teams to join and a newly- constructed workout facility, but jobs are also obtainable for students who enjoy recruiting and refereeing.
For those particularly lazy Saturday nights, Carmike Cinemas offers a discount to all college students. Additionally, Phi Mu and Kappa Delta sororities have visited Rocket Roller Rink across from Walmart to have a fun, 80s style evening. Create your own theme night, and bring out your inner child.
If you have a desire to serve in your community, Green Acres Nursing Home is six minutes away from campus and is always appreciative of visitors. New City Church is currently looking for volunteers, as well as tutors for the Boys and Girls Club. Mariah Dantzler, a junior, frequently visits Blandy Hills Elementary School to help the students with homework, or just to hang out. “We play games in the gym or do their homework. I look forward to seeing their progress academically and socially throughout the year,” she said.
