Local business promotes voting in community
With elections on Nov. 2, people are beginning to wonder about the candidates and who to vote for. A local Milledgeville business allows for GCSU students and residents of Baldwin County to become both informed and involved with the upcoming elections. Digital Bridges has been open since January and is located at 127 W. Hancock St., next to Box Office Books in downtown Milledgeville.
“Digital Bridges is a community led initiative that allows people to find innovative uses of technology to make a better life for the students at GCSU and in Baldwin County,” said Digital Bridges Communications Coordinator Daniel McDonald.
Digital Bridges has hosted three candidate debates that have allowed people to become familiar with candidates running for election in November. The first debate was held on Oct. 5 with the Georgia House and Senate candidates. The second debate was held on Oct. 6 with the candidates for Georgia’s 12th Congressional District. The last debate was held on Oct. 19 with candidates for the Baldwin County Board of Education’s first and fifth districts.
“All of the debates involved the community through the website 10questions.com, which allowed people to ask questions to the candidates which were featured in the debates. The debates were also streamed live through the website wimba.com,” McDonald said.
Digital Bridges is a venture of GCSU funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and offers many services to the community on top of the recent candidate coverage.
“Many small business, marketing and public relations students that are working with businesses in the community this semester use (Digital Bridges) as a meeting space. We also assist with small business development and support. Every Thursday small business owners or students who want to open a business can come here and meet with our UGA finance advisor,” McDonald said.
Digital Bridges also offers beginning and advanced computer classes every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m.
On Oct. 23, Digital Bridges will be hosting a Nostalgia Video Game Tournament during the Deep Roots Festival. The tournament will consist of four separate sections: Mario Kart on the Nintendo 64 and Wii, Guitar Hero on the PlayStation 2, Nostalgia (Ms. Pacman, Tetris, Duck Hunt, and more), and Street Fighter 2 Turbo. The cost to enter the tournament is $5 and there will be trophies, T-shirts and gift cards awarded to the winners.
“We thought (a gaming tournament) would just be something fun to do during Deep Roots and would be a good fun way to get the community to come in and check out Digital Bridges,” McDonald said.
All of the information about the services Digital Bridges offer can be found at their website, www.thedigitalbridges.org.
