First Issue Props & Slops

If you haven’t had a chance to grab our first issue, don’t look at this! Well ok, you can. But it’d be better after you’ve looked at the paper as a whole. I’m going to go over some issues we had in this issue, but I’m also going to go over the awesome things that were in it.

As always, if you find an error or would simply like to share your opinion with The Colonnade, you can contact us multiple ways. You can:
-Stop by MSU 128 in person
-Email colonnadeletters@gcsu.edu
-Post a comment on our website
-Tweet @GCSUnade
-Send a Facebook to The Colonnade
-Call us at 478.445.4511
-Fax us at 478.445.2559

You’re also welcome to comment here as well!

So let’s get to the Week of Welcome issue!

Slops:

Our usual border on photographs is a one point, black line. On two photos we accidentally did other colors. One is red, the other yellow. This can easily happen with all the colors editors are using to help them lay out their sections. We like to use colored boxes to ensure the same spacing between items. So when you use a colored box and forget to change the default color back to black and then put in a photo, the result is a border that’s not our standard color.
On the left photo, the credit just says Drake took the photo. Obviously, Drake Simons is who it should be credited too. Again, a simple mistake because we don’t refer to our colleague and friend as Drake Simons, we just call him Drake.

These next two errors are totally on me. In the poll, I put filler text for the next week’s question instead of an actual text. It’s easy to look over a page and see no holes so assume we didn’t forget anything. When in fact, I forgot a new poll question and just kept in the old answers! To see the real poll question, visit GCSUnade.com. I also misspelled Ian’s last name. No real excuse, just a mistake. Don’t worry though, I did apologize to him!

Journalists like to be clever. This headline proves that. In case you didn’t know, the new coaches name is Hope.
I do hope that we’re not the only ones that smile when we read something like this. :)

So Drake is an awesome photographer and always takes solid shots, but I really like this photo. It’s got great lines and direction. And, it’s also got an establishing element (street sign on the light). When we tell someone to go take photos of construction, you don’t expect much. Drake took something usually boring and made it more interesting.

I chose this for two reasons. One, it’s a great package using a photo and a pull quote (and another solid photo from Drake). But the main reason is because I really liked the article. I wouldn’t suggest trying to read it from the scan, especially since it jumps to another page, but I would highly encourage you go read this article to learn more about what’s going on downtown. It’s a big issue in a town like Milledgeville. Everyone will be directly or indirectly affected.

I couldn’t scan this because it was too large, but I couldn’t leave it out of this post. I absolutely love the main package in the Feature section. I think the idea was great to combine many different submissions, along with some staff-written pieces. There’s great color and photos as well. The font on the headline is also catchy and adds to the overall friendly, inviting feel.

That’s about all I have to say. There are lots of things I didn’t mention that were done very well. And there were some minor editing errors that I didn’t point out due to space. If you want to see the full list of errors, pick up the September 3 issue and look for the corrections in the opinions section.

I’d love it if you’d give us your thoughts on what you liked and didn’t like in the first issue. Also any errors you noticed that we didn’t mention or might have missed. We are only human after all! ;)
