New campus bookstore naming contest ends
Students, faculty, staff and community members all sent in their best submissions to name the new bookstore that will open in March in the Campus Theatre, located at 135 Hancock St. The contest ran from Feb. 23 to March 8.
Individuals could either e-mail in or mail their suggestions. The three best suggestions will be given a $100 gift card to the bookstore and the student with the winning suggestion will receive an additional $250 gift card.
The best suggestions will be chosen by a committee called the President’s Executive Council. This council includes Olivia Dowd, a representative from the Resident Student Association, and a representative of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
According to Henry Battison, director of University Communications, the judging committee for the contest will meet sometime this week to review entries.
“The contest entries have to go from the judging committee to (President Leland) and her committee so we will announcing it before the April 20 grand opening,” Battison said.
Zach Millins, president of SGA, will be one of the judges. Mullins said he is excited that students get a chance to participate in the naming of the bookstore.
“I think that this is a great opportunity for students to become involved in something that will have a lasting impact on Georgia College and I am eager to see the results,” Mullins said.
Dr. Bob Wilson, who was also asked to be on the council, is a university historian and teaches about, as well as researches, Milledgeville history.
“I think the naming contest is a great idea, and should make people much more aware of the new bookstore,” Wilson said.
Freshman Georgia McCook was very excited to be a part of GCSU and Milledgeville history via the contest, he said.
“I love creative stuff, so of course I will participate,” McCook said.
Another judge for the contest is bookstore manager Lynda Grable who did not want to look at the entries before the deadline to be fair to all the contestants, but said there were a lot of entries when she looked last.
Kyle Cullars, a member of the judging committee and executive director of Auxiliary Services, confirmed that there were a lot of entries.
“What I am looking for in a winning entry is a name that capitalizes on the history of the school and the building, but also keeps in mind that it is a bookstore,” Cullars said.
