Early morning incident alarms students
At 4:54 a.m. this morning students, faculty and staff were alerted via Connect ED of a “person with a weapon” on GCSU campus and told to “barricade” themselves in a safe place. The alert was prompted by a 911 call to the Milledgeville Police Department in which it was reported that a man with a gun was threatening three students from the Napier Hall parking lot from his cell phone.
GCSU Public Safety and Milledgeville Police “followed (the reported gunman) through the Centennial Center area and back toward the Wellness Depot,” according to a press release from University Communications. The reported gunman was arrested on the railroad tracks between Green and Tattnall streets.
Not a GCSU student, Holden Furner, 20, of Gainesville, Ga. was charged with “three felony counts of terroristic threats, underage possession of alcohol and misdemeanor obstruction of an officer,” according to the press release.
The incident was apparently sparked by an “incident” between Furner and an ex-girlfriend, according to Dave Groseclose, assistant vice president for Public Safety in the press release.
After the arrest, Connect ED subscribers received an “all clear” text message and phone call.
The automated text messages and phone calls were sent via GCSU’s Connect ED emergency alert system. Connect ED covers 60 percent of the GCSU community, including about 5,000 students, faculty and staff.
