SGA empties budget for the semester, allocates money to GCSU Fishing Team for prestigious tournament
In this week’s SGA meeting, held in the Student Activities Center in the Dogwood Conference Room, the Fishing Team cleaned out this semester’s remaining $131.
Initially, Sen. Josh Futch, also a member of the Fishing Team, motioned for the team to receive a $125 grant to go towards their participation costs in an upcoming Auburn University fishing tournament. But with only $131 left in the SGA’s budget for the semester, Senator Andrew Whittaker offered a proposal in stating “Due to the fact that we only have $131 remaining in our budget for the semester, I propose a friendly amendment that we clean out our budget for the fishing team.”
Sen. Futch said that the Fishing Team has been actively working to fundraise, earning a sponsorship for their team jerseys. The team has also acquired a few sponsors, who give discounts for tackle and other fishing equipment, but no cash.
“It has been hard for us to raise money,” said Sen. Futch. “Our sponsors are only willing to give us discounts, not actual cash.”
The Fishing tournament, named the Auburn University Fall Classic, is held Nov. 19 through Nov. 21. This tournament seems like it will benefit GCSU’s name as well.
The tournament will include some major schools, including the University of Georgia, Clemson University, and the University of Alabama. Beating one of these schools would definitely place GCSU’s name in the public eye.
FLW Outdoor Magazine will also be publishing an article featuring the top college fishing teams in the nation. If the GCSU Fishing Team attends, our name will be mentioned in the article.
“This tournament is one of the most prestigious in college fishing tournaments, and it will definitely get the GCSU name out there,” said a guest speaker from the Appropriations Committee.”
