Lady Bobcats drop to 2-2 as Bears sweep hard-fought series

The GCSU women’s basketball team (2-2) fought a hard battle on the court against Lenoir-Rhyne University (5-1) Monday night only to have a chance at revenge slip out of their grasp in the last minute and a half, ending the game with a 67-59 loss.

After being defeated thirteen days earlier by the same Bears team, the Bobcats were hoping to come out of this rematch with a win added to their season standing. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, Lenoir-Rhyne outscored them and now holds a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Bobcats, resulting from the boost from their last two victories.

Throughout the game, the score was back and forth with 11 lead changes and nine ties, which kept the spectators wondering who would claim the victory.

“The game went back and forth the whole time with a lead here and a lead there,” Head Coach John Carrick said. “The girls got out and competed, played hard, and gave it their best, but unfortunately, the time ran out when Lenoir-Rhyne had the lead.”

There was never a double-digit lead by either team for the duration of the game and the final score reflected the widest margin (eight points) that occurred during the whole 40 minutes of play.

Leading the ranks with double-digit scoring for the Bobcats was junior point guard Shandrea Moore. She contributed a total of 13 points to the scoreboard for GCSU and added six assists and five rebounds.

Moore was accompanied in the double-digits by senior forward Tiauna Brantley and junior guard Daniela Nopuente, who each added ten points to their team’s score. Brantley now has a four-game streak of scoring in double figures, having accomplished this feat in every game this season.

Coach Carrick and Moore agree that the Bobcats lost to the Bears in their defensive game and in free throws, and the statistics reflect the same thoughts.

“We competed hard, but we made some defensive errors that were costly and hurt our mental game,” Carrick said.

“We just kept missing free throws and that set us back a lot,” Moore said. “The last two games have been the same in that. That’s something we definitely need to work on.”

The Bobcats struggled to sink their shots against the Lenoir-Rhyne defense. GCSU only managed to take away points from thirty-six percent of their shots attempted from the floor.

The Bears, on the other hand, showed off at the free throw line by hitting twenty of twenty-six shots, and also won the battle in the paint 32-18.

The Bobcats will be back in action at the start of winter break to begin Peach Belt Conference play on Dec. 15, facing Augusta State University (1-2) in an away game.
