Emerging leader chosen
Each year ODK selects a student, typically from the freshman or sophomore class, to honor as an emerging leader for the campus. Students are only placed in the selection process for this honor through a nomination.
Sophomore Mosher was completely unaware that she was even being considered for this recognition and honor.
“I was completely surprised. I was just sitting in class and then representatives from ODK walked in the room and began reading off the accomplishments of the student that was being honored,” Mosher said. “The more they described this person, the more it sounded like they were talking about me, and when they got to the end and said my name, I was completely stunned.”
Mosher’s large involvement in a variety of clubs and organizations on campus showcases her potential for being a great leader. Some of her extracurricular activities include the Leadership Certificate Program, Gamma Sigma Sigma, the Gold Star Leadership Program, Campus Catholics, A Do Something Group, Student Ambassadors and a couple honor societies. It is obvious that Mosher values her involvement in the college community.
Role models play a large role in Mosher’s success as a leader on the college campus. Mosher places her parents at the top of her role model list.
“My parents have done a really good job allowing me to grow into who I am. They have given me a great background and firm beliefs and I am thankful for that,” Mosher said.
As far as aspirations in life, Mosher is currently completing coursework with the hopes of becoming a nurse. But beyond her major, Mosher desires to be a trustworthy friend that others want to be around.
“I want to get the most I can out of life by leading an upstanding life. I want to be a role model to others around me in the same way they have been role models to me,” Mosher said.
Mosher’s inspiration for leadership comes from others. When someone does something good for her, she is inspired to do the same.
“When I see acts of kindness around me, I want to put more effort into the life I’m living. I just really like helping and interacting with others,” Mosher said.
The impact and influence that Mosher wants to have on the GCSU campus is simple.
“I want to look back and say that I did college my way and not how someone else wanted me to do it,” Mosher said. “I want to get as much out of [college] as possible and also give to it as much possible. Hopefully, I will leave an invisible mark of some sort on the campus.”
Mosher is excited about her unexpected selection as the 2008 Student Emerging Leader and hopes to fill the shoes she has been given with this title. She wants to continue learning all that she can to become the best leader she knows how to be and leave her invisible mark wherever she goes.
“Leadership is an ongoing process and I don’t think I’ll ever completely finish learning what it means to be a leader,” Mosher said.
