Bandstand: rock it out
The sounds of the first WGUR 88.9 FM Bandstand Competition filled the streets. With six bands ready to bring the house down, the night commenced with a performance by Orange Free State. The rest of the lineup included The Austin Kyle Band, Iconoclast, Titan, Trent Mayo and Orange Vanessa.
“The bandstand competition initially started out as a fundraising idea for the station,” said Blaire Bachman, WGUR promotional director and senior mass communication major. “Later, it evolved into a major competition between bands, in order to secure a spot for the WGUR Spring Concert Series.”
WGUR is commited to connecting GCSU students with the music they want to hear.
“WGUR’s Bandstand Competition allows students the opportunity to get involved with their student run radio station,” Bachman said. “It gives them (the students) the chance to vote for the bands and music they want to hear during the next semester’s concerts.”
The WGUR Spring Concert Series will feature four concerts at Velvet Elvis in Downtown Milledgeville on Tuesday nights next semester. Concert dates are Jan. 27, Feb. 10 and April 21.
T-shirts will also be sold next semester, and they will run between eight and ten dollars. If worn to any of the spring concert series, fans will be admitted to the concert at no cover charge.
As voted on by the audience, the winner of the WGUR 88.9 FM Bandstand Competition and $100 is The Austin Kyle Band. They will headline the WGUR Spring Concert Series along with three other bands picked by Wednesday night’s voters. Among those bands are Orange Vanessa, Titan and Trent Mayo.
