Blue and Green all over Halloween
The festivities began last Friday with Fright Night 2008, a costume party hosted by the Resident Student Association. ?
Organizers spent over 7 hours decorating the West Campus Center at The Village.? The entire building was decked with Halloween decorations including spider webs, lights, and dead bodies covered in bloody sheets (the “bodies”, ironically, were old Colonnades), setting the mood for the night.
The costumes were lively and varied, with everything from cowgirls, bumblebees, elves, faeries, wizards, Bret Michaels, Dr. House and even the President himself.
Towards the end of the night, a contest was held to see who had the best costumes in four categories: most original, funniest, scariest, and best couple.
Jacqueline Clark won scariest with her take on The Crow.? Justin Stubbs won for most original with his homeless person costume, complete with two signs reading “Will work for Easymac” and “Bet You Can’t HIt Me With a Quarter!” ?
Matt Nelson won for most original with his Ninja Turtles costume.? Nelson said his costume idea from friend Blair Welch, who had a very simple reason for the costume. ?
“I knew I had a shell,” Welch said.? Welch also won for best couple, along with Alex Romero as their take on Juno and Bleaker from the movie Juno. ?
The setting for the party impressed everyone who came, with the West Campus Center being a step up from where the party was held last year, the small and crowded MSU Lounge. ?
Rory Leahy, not in costume, still came and enjoyed the festivities.?
“I think it’s a good idea.? Good opportunity,” he said.? “It’s too bad that that not more people came.”
For the dozens that did come out, however, there was plenty of fun to be had on the chilly night.
Of course, there was other events leading up to Halloween night.? On Wednesday, CAB held A Night of Fright in the courtyard between Parkhust and Foundation.? There they showed The Strangers, along with free pizza and scary movie trivia for prizes.? Following the movie a haunted house was held in Parkhurst.
On Thursday, the annual trick or treating in the halls was held, this time in the 500 and 600 buildings at The Village.? Kids from around the city, many of them the young children of GCSU staff, went around the various rooms collecting candy to eat later.? At the same time residents from the other residence halls set up tables with other activities in the West Campus Center, providing even more fun and candy for the little kids. ?
Of course, the week of events ended with the performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, held in Russell Auditorium. Performed by the Clarke Street Lip Sitters, the stage play of the 30-year old classic was sure to please the audience, as they were even given props to help participate.
The events surrounding Halloween here at GCSU have always been fun and exciting, and this year’s combination of costumes, haunted houses and cross dressing make it no exception.
