‘Saw V’ review

‘Saw V’ was marketed on the selling tag line “you won’t believe how it ends.” Well, I think it’s pretty safe to say that at this point, the ‘Saw’ franchise has finally pushed itself into a trap where the creators have no room to breathe, and all we can wonder is WHEN it will just end. Seeing as how a sixth chapter has already been announced, I don’t think I’ll ever believe that this road has an ending; at least not until they throw Jigsaw into outer space with ‘Saw X.’

That would be the most disastrous way to conclude this deteriorating saga, but coming straight out of this screening, I can’t say that I would trade the opportunity to watch Jason in space if this were my only other choice. There’s a fine line between which ones are better or worse, but this one, for lack of a better term, just flat out sucks!

If you want to give it a plot, I guess the simplest way to understand ‘Saw V’ is that Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is the only person left alive who can continue Jigsaw’s work of deadly traps, and when the secret of his identity threatens to reach the surface of authority, he must use what the killer has left behind to eliminate all the loose ends before it’s too late. Maybe it’s catchy enough for a start, but if you ask me, it was already too late by the end of ‘Saw III.’

As anyone else surely will, I came into this fifth installment wondering just how many more rabbits the Jigsaw masterminds had left to pull out of their bloody hats. And judging by the opening trap, which portrays a man chained to a table with his only escape being to cut off his own hands, it was perfectly clear from the get-go that the ideas are wearing thin, and the creativity is becoming ludicrous. I guess they forgot that the rabbit has to disappear again before the job is done.

Although it was slightly enticing to see what would happen if our first victim didn’t break free in sixty seconds, I feel confident to say to my readers that had it not been my job to let you all know whether or not your money would be well spent, sixty seconds is all I would’ve needed to be convinced that this wasn’t even worth the time… which is very sad considering it only lasts about 85 minutes.

It’s hard to pinpoint just where exactly this franchise went wrong. Demand is obviously what drives production companies into spitting a new one out every Halloween, and I guess there is still an audience out there that just can’t see enough blood. But when the original crew abandons the product after realizing the inevitable downfall, it really becomes a shame because any die hard fan of the original ‘Saw’ will probably lose sight of why they were ever drawn to this in the first place.

Personally, my original catch to all of this was the creators’ ability to plot a decent story behind all the torture, and give the viewers a connection of sentiment to the people involved. And being someone who despised both of Eli Roth’s installments, I’m afraid that ‘Saw’ has turned into ‘Hostel’ as all the whys go out the window, and the focus is set on just what can be done with a bunch of deadly contraptions and several people who are dumb enough to fall for them. If there was any purpose underneath all the gore in this movie, it never surfaced. And even if it had, I strongly doubt the victims would’ve garnered any pity from me.

I know that a lot of you have probably been wondering if it were possible, but now you finally see what happens when I watch a movie that just absolutely fails. I always try to maintain a lenient set of standards, but ‘Saw V’ is officially one of those films that in the simplest terms; should NOT have been made!

It serves no valiant purpose other than to continue something that was already hanging by a thread, and the desperation to keep it all going has become way too obvious. It’s one thing to want money, but at this point, even a good paycheck won’t be enough to redeem what this franchise has done to itself. And if I must close this bashing with a little respect to their lingo, I’ll say with absolute confidence, that they set their own trap, and instead of getting out when they should’ve, they just kept playing the game. Well boys…… GAME OVER!
