Bobcats struggle at AASU

No. 10 ranked Armstong Atlantic State University snapped GCSU’s baseball team’s nine game winning streak by taking two of three games from the Bobcats over the weekend in the team’s first Peach Belt Conference series.
No. 11 GCSU dropped the first two games 6-2 and 8-4, but a ninth inning rally in game three gave the Bobcats a 4-2 victory.
In the inning, senior second baseman Tony Rice doubled to right field plating sophomore designated hitter Andrew Evans, who reached on a walk, to take a 3-2 lead. Rice then advanced to third when redshirt freshman centerfielder Brad Jackson singled, and scored the games final run when junior leftfielder Derek Johns was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Senior pitcher Shaun Monica continued to pitch well in his 6.2 innings of work in game three, but earned a no-decision in the effort. Senior closer Michael Newman got the win with his 2.1 innings of hitless work.
Sophomore right fielder led the Bobcats at the plate with his three-for-five performance that included a run. Senior catcher Pete Paris and Rice each went two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.
Senior starter Sean Heimpel continued to struggle on the mound in game one, surrendering six earned runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work to take the 6-2 loss.
Pirate’s starter Cody Walden held the Bobcat bats in check, allowing only five hits and two runs in his seven innings of work to collect the win.
GCSU’s bats were held at bay once again in game two when the team could only muster eight hits off of the Pirate duo of starter Ross Partee and reliever Brandon McCree. McRee got the win, while Bobcat reliever Brandon Owens received his first loss of the season.
Two GCSU batters did manage to have multi-hit performances in the game. Sophomore shortstop Chandler Snell went three-for-four and redshirt sophomore third baseman Brooks Robinson added two hits and a pair of RBI’s in the 8-4 loss.
The Bobcats, now 10-4, return home this weekend for a three game series against Shippensburg University. The first two games will be played on Saturday at 1 p.m. and the finale will start at noon on Sunday.
