Smile Bright in the Spotlight Contest

“Crest and Scope have searched and found three of the brightest smiles in America” and one of those three finalists is a former GCSU student.
Karla Dempsey, now a senior at UGA, found a contest on-line, the Smile Bright in the Spotlight Contest. She threw her hands up and decided to give the contest a shot. Now, 17,997 people later, Karla has a shot at being the official Miss People’s Choice, presenting trophies on stage at the People’s Choice Awards Jan. 8 and showing off the best smile in America.
The People’s Choice Awards are taking place in Los Angeles, Calif., where Karla could receive the star treatment. Before the show, she would get a pre-award show make over from Joanna Schlip, a celebrity make-up artist, and then meet Ryan Seacrest, also a Georgia native, on the red carpet at the People’s Choice Awards.
After the award show she would continue her star treatment as the guest of honor at the official People’s Choice Awards after party, an all expense paid trip to Los Angeles with five of her friends.
However, the competition is not over yet. Voting ends Friday, Nov. 30.
The other two contestants are from Milwaukee, Wis., and Seattle, Wash. If her being the hometown native with a smile to boot is not incentive enough to find a computer and vote, then it should encourage voters to know she is also a kind person.
“She is one of those people who would rather spend a Saturday playing with dogs at the Athens pound than go shopping for a new shirt,” said Kim Colbert, Karla’s sister. “She truly loves life and loves people. That kind of person seldom gets recognition. (Karla) is very beautiful on the inside and out. The outside beauty got her a call back to the finals, the inside beauty got her to the final three.”
For Karla to get past the final three and onto the red carpet in Los Angeles it is up to her supporters. After previously attending GCSU, she hopes to gain support from the student body. Helen Nichols, a senior psychology major is happy to vote for a former GCSU student.
“It’s eye opening when someone locally wins a national competition,” said Nichols. “I would definitely vote for (Karla). It’s great to see someone from GCSU in the spotlight, and it’s good to support them, in this case Karla.”
The winner will be chosen Dec. 10. Anxiously waiting will be Karla Dempsey and her sister Kim, one of Karla’s five guests.
“(Karla) has the better smile, but I have the better jokes,” said Kim. “Her smile is contagious. What an amazing opportunity for her to have a moment in the spotlight.”
