Hanging of the Greens
A familiar occasion for some and a new experience for others, GCSU’s annual Hanging of the Greens took place last Thursday night, November 29.
This year’s event hosted a moderate turnout. Spectators were treated to all the usual spectacles associated with past years at the event.
During the Hanging of the Greens, members of the GCSU community come out to take part in the decorating of Front Campus for the holiday season. Anyone interested is asked to help hang the greens but it is not required that all spectators participate.
Wreaths are hung, lights are strung and it is all to the tune of everyone’s favorite holiday classics played by GCSU’s own instrumentalists. While the musicians could not really be seen by those in attendance, their presence was surely felt. Spectators could be seen swaying to the sounds and even singing along in some instances.
As usual with the past few years, the weather has not aided in getting the community in any sort of holiday spirit. Spectators this year were seen not in scarves and mittens, but in t-shirts or light jackets. The hot cocoa and cider that were provided was simply a gentle reminder of how un-necessary it was to supply hot drinks that are typically supplied for the purpose of keeping the spectator warm.
During the arrangements, guests entertained themselves by watching the scene and taking a seat on the lawn. Some who had dogs on leashes let the little canines run freely and no one seemed to mind.
Despite the weather, holiday cheer could still be felt amongst the crowd.
Driven, maybe, to get the spirit going and huddled together, everyone was sipping their warm beverage, pretending it was cold out and enjoying all the sights around that there are to see during this holiday season.
