Saw IV Movie Review

“It may still be working logically, but seriously, how many more rabbits are they going to try and pull out of this hat?”

B

It’s a funny story how James Wan, Darren Lynn Bousman, and the rest of the ‘Saw’ crew came to be so dynamic with their creation known as “Jigsaw.” When they stunned the whole world with such an unprecedented twist in the original, they had no intention to continue on, but as the cult fan base grew, they decided to expand on their crazed killer by giving him a legacy beyond just his sick games and blood thirsty attitude towards his victims. While their efforts may have sustained a valiant admiration through two additional films, sooner or later, you just have to realize that it’s time to throw in the towel, and go out on a high note. The die hard fans believe that Jigsaw’s story will only continue getting better, but the majority of moviegoers have already decided that when it comes to a fourth installment, desperation begins to take over, and all quality is lost. I credit ‘Saw IV’ for not turning out to be the bomb that I feared it would be, but it is very obvious, by now, that Bousman is pulling every rabbit out of the hat to try and keep this thing going.

Following the deaths of Jigsaw, and his apprentice Amanda, the police soon learn of Detective Kerry’s murder (through a ribcage split). When two FBI profile officers are called in to help another detective scam through Jigsaw’s latest compilation of deadly games, a fellow SWAT commander, Rigg, is abducted and thrown into the middle of a new game. With only ninety minutes to go, Commander Rigg must overcome several traps in order to survive the deadly game… the clock is ticking. “Live or die, make your choice!”

It was really hard to predict just how ‘Saw IV’ would carry on its plot when the title character had been inevitably killed in part III, but as shocking and ironic as it may sound, this story does play out in a very logical way, and even though Jigsaw is dead, he is still a very crucial part of this thing, aside from the fact that there are plenty of flashbacks to keep his presence felt.

When Leigh Whannell completed the screenplay for ‘Saw III,’ his idea was that this was the culmination of what he and his friends had created, but when three more films were green lit for future production (yes, there is going to be a V and a VI) shortly after, Whannell began to question just how it would be possible to keep bringing Jigsaw back. Without Whannell penning the screenplay for ‘Saw IV,’ the story seems a little out of place compared to earlier three, but I think with Jigsaw already finished, that was bound to happen anyway.

Like all of its predecessors, ‘Saw IV’ is certain to freeze some white-knuckles with its dangerous traps and jumpy ambushes throughout. Bousman and his crew never fail to shock the audience with their sickening creativity, but creativity can only go so far before people realize that the storyline is beginning to run dry. There are enough surprises throughout ‘Saw IV’ to keep it afloat, but ever since the original, this ship continues to just slowly sink away, and at the rate its going, it is bound to become another classic example of ‘Friday the 13th;’ I just hope, and pray, that they don’t eventually toss Jigsaw into outer space.

BE SURE TO WATCH ALL 3 OF THE PREVIOUS ‘SAWS’ BEFORE YOU MAKE THIS TRIP!!!
