Letters to the Editor

Crosswalk talks not enough

Dear Editor,

Thanks for your article (“Student injuries in crosswalk prompts open forum,” Oct. 12).  My daughter was struck and injured crossing the street at a pedestrian crosswalk last spring as she was going to the Student Union.  I was very distressed that the city of Milledgeville did not ticket the driver and seemed to have the attitude that cars rule the road and walkers just need to get out of the way.  I discovered that the crossing light was broken at the time of the accident!
A student at Georgia State University in Atlanta was struck and killed by a truck crossing the street just recently. The crosswalk situation in Milledgeville and GCSU is a disaster waiting to happen.
To make the area safer, it will require that traffic be rerouted, streets and intersections reworked, better signage, more police enforcement and education of walkers and drivers. I am encouraged that the city seems to be taking some interest in the problem.  Hopefully the problems there can be improved before our worst nightmares become reality.

Sincerely,

David Brooks
GCSU Parent

Something for the soldiers

Dear Editor,

I want to suggest that GCSU should organize a week specially devoted to students who belong to US Army or any of their family member is in US Army. This can be done by advertising them to wear a special tag, sticker or ribbon or wristband. Anybody wearing such identification during the week should be made to feel special and other students should be encouraged to thank them in some way or the other like cheering for them when they enter the class, in the cafeteria or in shuttle. Even the teachers should be encouraged to participate. Just five days for our brothers in army is not too much as compared to 365 days they serve for us putting their life at stake.

Sincerely,

Aman Khanna
grad student, accounting
