Ways to immerse yourself in the GCSU community

Special to The Colonnade

Listed below are some of the student organizations that you can join to meet new people and become more involved with the campus life.

The Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity

All Faiths Alliance for Equity & Social Justice

Recognizing that many individuals become interested in social justice issues as a result of their religious commitment to a just and equitable society, the All Faiths
Alliance for Equity and Social Justice seeks to provide opportunities for GCSU students, faculty and staff to come together as a diverse group of people of all faiths to work for social justice and equity.

Minority Advisement Program/Student Oriented Activities for Retention (MAP/SOAR); Multicultural Affairs

This program is designed to assist new minority students to become integrated into campus life at GCSU. Through a relationship with an experienced peer counselor (MAP Mentor) and a GCSU employee (SOAR Mentor), the new student will be guided through his/her first year experience.
Multicultural Affairs works to ensure that there are adequate programs and initiatives which increase the retention of students of color, provide support and advocacy for cultural populations including those defined by sexual orientation, enhance awareness and appreciation of cultural and racial diversity and promote a campus climate that celebrates difference.

Bobcat Media Productions (Television)

Bobcat Media Productions provides an opportunity to have your work submitted and broadcasted on the campus television station. Many first and second year Mass Communication students are involved in the production process.

History Club

Like history? Like having fun?  Check out the GCSU History Club!
The History Club is one of the oldest student organiza

tions on campus and has been going strong for over 80 years.  The History Club is open to students of all majors who enjoy history and like meeting new people.
So what does the History Club do?  We have weekly meetings, and we do a number of fun activities every year.  Every October we do a haunted cemetery tour in Memory Hill Cemetery.  We also host guest history speakers at GCSU including nationally acclaimed historians and a Pulitzer Prize winning author.  Every spring we take a trip to a historic city.  In the past years, the club has visited St. Simon’s Island, Savannah and Charleston.  These activities are only just a few of the many exciting things the History Club plans every year.
If you are interested in joining or have any questions concerning the History Club, please contact Tanya Saylor, History Club president, at tanya_saylor@ecats.gcsu.edu.
Hope you have a wonderful semester and welcome to Georgia College!

novices to the great outdoors as well as challenge those more experienced.  Some of these include instruction in the fundamentals of camping, introduction to the climbing wall, backpacking, rafting, rock climbing trips and open climbing wall days.

The G.I.V.E. Center
Project Impact consists of a movie, a speaker and a community service project that are built around a centralized theme.
These themes include topics such as domestic violence, cancer, AIDS and HIV awareness, eating disorders, disabilities, hunger, homelessness issues, teen suicide,  depression and alcohol awareness.
Project Impact will take place on the third Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. in The G.I.V.E. Center (Ennis Hall). This service program is being co-sponsored with CAB and Blockbuster Videos.
The movie is "Pay it Forward," which features Helen Hunt, Kevin Spacey and Haley Joel Osment. Just Imagine! You do a favor that really helps someone and tell him or her not to pay it back but to pay it forward to three other people who, in turn, each pay it forward to three more, and on and on into a global outpouring of kindness and decency. Impossible? Is it possible for one idea to change the world. How much impact can one heartfelt idea have? Do yourself a favor and find out; come see "Pay it Forward."
We will also be talking about The G.I.V.E. Center, why it is important to become a more active and concerned citizen and the start of the "Pay it Forward" movement at GCSU. Everyone is encouraged to attend. If you have any questions or want to know more, call (478)445-5700.
