Public Safety covers all angles for Fall semester

Dear Students,

Welcome to GCSU!  We hope that your stay with us for the next few years will be an enjoyable educational experience.  The Department of Public Safety is charged with the responsibility of protecting the state’s most cherished resource; its children and future leaders.  We are glad that you chose to attend the states Public Liberal Arts University and it is our intent to keep you safe in your person and belongings.
Known as the father of modern policing, Robert Peel said “The ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon public approval of police actions. Police must secure the willing co-operation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public.”
We at Public Safety realize that we need your cooperation to be successful.  It is our hope to work with you in an environment of mutual respect.  We exist to serve the university community.
You will be pleased to know that GCSU is protected by over a hundred video cameras, 64 emergency call boxes, panic alarms in every residence hall room and 15 sworn officers ready to serve.  All of our officers are POST certified and have received advanced training in a number of areas including response to an active shooter.
Our motto at Public Safety is to protect, serve and educate.  We feel that we are part of the education process at GCSU and have made it a commitment in our enforcement efforts.  We have a Public Safety Sergeant devoted full time to crime prevention and education efforts. We believe so strongly in the education component of our mission, you will notice our motto on the rear of all of our patrol vehicles.
As long as everyone adheres to the GCSU honor code of reason, respect and responsibility, your time at GCSU should be a pleasant one.  We encourage you to behave responsibly and make wise decisions.  If you have any questions about safety or security please feel free to contact us at Public Safety at 445-4400.

Sincerely,
Richard Goodson
Deputy Director
