Our Voice

Normally, The Voice represents the consensus view of The Colonnade staff members, and each week we discuss an issue that is important at the time, be it locally focused or nationally focused.
The editorial is also, normally, the most difficult thing to write and often has at least three different authors in the span of 500 words.
    Normally.
For this first issue, however, it falls on the me, the Editor-in-Chief, to write The Voice for this special Week of Welcome issue , and in those 500 words, I have to find a way to welcome you to GCSU, tell you about The Colonnade – who we are and what we do – and excite you for the upcoming academic year.
The challenge with The Voice this week is welcoming, informing, and inspiring, without repeating the editorials from the last several years.
    So, let’s do something different.
Enough talking about GCSU.  Enough talking about me.
    Let’s talk about you.
First, to any freshmen reading this, I can only confer upon you one piece of wisdom:  Hit the ground running, and hit it hard.  Meet people, get involved, and try something new.  Don’t be intimidated; we were all freshmen once.
To the transfer students, high-five on your choice to attend here.  You made the right decision.  You’ll be immersed in the community in no time.
To the returning students, these words of wisdom, these nuggets of profound advice, are probably close to the same repetitive tripe you’ve endured for years.  Hang in there, you’ll graduate someday.  Remember, don’t pick on the freshmen.
No matter who you are, remember that The Colonnade will be there for you every week with breaking news, sports, features and your opinions.  The student newspaper is a student organization of the students, for the students, and welcomes your comments, criticisms and suggestions. This tradition of service extends back to 1924.
Let out steam by venting in our Litter Box.  Look for our roving photographers to have your picture taken for the Bobcat Beat.  Send us letters at colonnadeletters@gcsu.
edu.
Everyone has a story to tell. Look for our reporters around campus, ands tell us what you think. Even better, come by our weekly Monday meetings in Maxwell Student Union and put your skills to the test as a writer, designer, or photographer.
Look for us beyond the newspaper on our Web site, www.gcsunade.com.  We’ve got exciting plans for it this semester, so look for photo galleries and other content to join our online-only stories and Public Safety Report podcasts.
Well, looks like I turned this into a talk about The Colonnade after all.  Oops.
In any case, welcome (back) to GCSU.  Here’s to looking at another exciting year.
