Library: more than books

Special to The Colonnade

The faculty and staff of the Library and Instructional Technology Center (LITC) welcome you to GCSU. We are pleased that you have chosen to become part of our learning community and know that your time here will be fulfilling. Here at the LITC, we’ve got something for everyone: whether you are writing a paper, doing research, e-mailing or simply looking for something interesting to read, we can help with all of your information needs.

Circulation Desk

The Circulation Desk is the place to check out all books and materials.  It is also the place to pick up GIL Express books and Interlibrary Loan materials. You can get great information on the My GIL Account for monitoring your account and electronic renewal information to avoid those messy fines, fees and blocks. Your instructor may also place materials “on reserve” with the circulation desk.  It is very important that you visit this desk as soon as possible with your Bobcat card to have your library account activated.  Call (478) 445-4047 for more information.

Library Catalog

The GCSU Library Catalog provides access to information resources located at the library.  It can be used to search for books, audio-visual materials, music scores and various other resources.

GIL Universal Catalog

The GIL Universal Catalog provides access to the collective resources of all libraries of the University System of Georgia.   You may use this catalog to locate books that are not available at the library.  Students may use the GIL Express Service to borrow books from any USG library.  This free service has a rapid turn around time; materials are usually delivered in 2-3 business days.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan Services allow students to obtain journal articles and other library resources unavailable locally or through another USG institution. Call (478) 445-0975 for more information.

Research Help

Librarians are eager to help you find the information you need.  Don’t hesitate to ask them for assistance at the Reference Desk or by phone at (478) 445-0979.   You can even get help via e-mail: reference@gcsu.edu. And now you can even IM your reference questions; visit http://www2.gcsu.edu/library/reference/AskALibrarian.html for more information.

GALILEO

Georgia’s Online Learning Library is a collection of information resources, particularly article indexes and full-text databases.   It provides access to thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals, encyclopedias, directories, digitized primary resources, government information and more.  Off-campus and need the GALILEO password? Call the reference desk at (478) 445-0979 for assistance.

Journal Locator

The Journal Locator is a tool that can be used to search or browse for a specific periodical title or to browse available titles by subject area.  It informs the user of the availability and location of a periodical, whether it is online, in print or on microform.

Museum

The Library’s Museum includes three galleries featuring changing exhibits on a variety of topics. The Museum entrance is located on Clarke Street. For more information about the Museum, call (478) 445-4391 or visit http://www2.gcsu.edu/library/museum/.

Special Collections

Special Collections maintains the University Archives, the Paul D. Coverdell Papers, the Flannery O’Connor Collection, rare books and manuscript collections and the Horology Collection. The staff provides research assistance for all materials contained within the department and is responsible for providing quality outreach programs for the department. For further information/assistance, please call (478) 445-0988 or contact the department via e-mail at scinfo@gcsu.edu.

Study Rooms

The LITC has nearly 40 study rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis.    Dry erase markers may be checked out at the Circulation Desk for use on the white boards in each room.  A listening room is also available for music, foreign language studies and other media purposes.

Computer Labs

A valid GCSU identification card must be presented to enter the labs. The ITC offers over 100 Windows-based computers in three computer labs, a Macintosh and multimedia lab and a Macintosh classroom. In addition to the computer labs, students can check out multimedia equipment for producing and editing audio and video projects, as well as professional-level graphic design. For additional information concerning the technology labs, call (478) 445-4219.

iPods

Want to join the iPod revolution? The LITC has photo iPods and voice recorders available. Ask for these at the Circulation Desk. For additional information, call (478) 445-1275.

Media Production Resources

University Television (UTV) is located on the fourth floor of Atkinson Hall and serves the entire campus and community with a wide variety of video production services and cable programming. Many job opportunities are available for students through the Federal and College Work Study program, the Mass Communication practicum program, special class projects and the Bobcat Media Production Club.  For more information, call (478) 445-2952 or visit the Web site at http://www2.gcsu.edu/library/mpr/ut.htm.

Web Enabled Resources

Web Enabled Resources (WER) houses the team that brings GeorgiaVIEW Vista to faculty and students as a teaching and learning resource.  Although your primary contact will be the class instructor, WER is always in the background helping faculty help students learn more effectively and conveniently using all of the on-line tools available in GeorgiaVIEW Vista.  Your instructors may also ask you to use other on-line resources such as their Faculty Web site, the USG Podcasting Server and iTunes U.  WER is behind these as well.  To learn more about Web Enabled Resources, go to http://www2.gcsu.edu/library/WER/.
