2006-2007 Bobcat athletics year in review
In what has become a school tradition, the GCSU athletics teams continued to win in 2006-2007. The 10 varsity teams compete in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) of Division II, one of the most competitive conferences in the nation.
2006-2007 saw 16 Bobcat athletes named to All-Conference squads and five awarded with All-American honors. Bobcat athletics took home one conference championship and competed in six NCAA regional tournaments.
Women’s Soccer
The Bobcats ended the third varsity season with a 6-7-4 mark last year. The team ended their regular season on a high note with a win over Thomas University before falling in the first round of the PBC Tournament.
Golf
The GCSU golf team found themselves headed to their tenth straight NCAA tournament where they placed sixth. Senior Johan Cronvall was named to the PBC All-Conference team, and freshman Niclas Johansson was awarded with an All-American selection. The Bobcats finished the year ranked No. 7.
Men’s Basketball
Finishing with a 19-10 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the PBC, the men were lead by all-conference center Aaron Clark.
Women’s Basketball
The Lady Bobcats fought right to the end of their season. An overtime 66-65 loss to Clayton State University ended their season in the South Atlantic Regional Final. The Lady Bobcats Marquita Driskell was named to the PBC All-Conference team guiding them to a 22-10 overall record and a post of 10-6 in the PBC.
Men’s Tennis
The GCSU men’s tennis team enjoyed another successful season in which they found themselves ranked among the top 20 teams in Division II. Erick Siqueira, a red shirt junior, was named to the PBC All-Conference team for singles. Rodrigo Yamauti joined him on the all-conference squad for doubles. The team posted a 15-10 record and finished fourth in the PBC.
Women’s Tennis
13 straight NCAA Tournament appearances sums up the success of GCSU’s women’s tennis. Celine Martin and Marjorie Ceppo were named to the All-Conference team for doubles. Martin was also honored for her singles performance. The women went 20-8 on the season and finished ranked No. 9 in Division II.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
Each team saw its share of success lead by all-conference honoree Richard Dobson who set a school record time in the PBC Cross Country Championships.
Softball
The GCSU softball team entered the season with high expectations coming off their 2006 PBC championship. While they could not defend their title, the season was successful. Their 35-21 mark, including 13 wins in the PBC, was good enough to place them third in the conference. Third baseman Keidra Baitey was honored with an All-Conference nod and an All-American selection.
Baseball
GCSU baseball has truly established itself as a national force in Division II baseball. The Bobcats posted a 46-16 mark including a 23-7 PBC record and their second straight conference championship. Outfielder Justin Mills was named PBC player of the year as well as being selected to the All-Conference team and All-American team. Mills was joined by four of his teammates on the All-conference team. Four Bobcats were also named to the All-region team. The Bobcats ended the season ranked No. 13 after being picked No. 1 in the preseason poll.
