Stress relief

Students may claim that stress motivates, but many are feeling a little too much stress this week because of finals.
When it gets to be too much, stress is no longer helpful, but actually causes poor academic performance. Stress can also cause lowered immunity and can interfere with memory, which can make studying that much harder.
Students turn in many different directions to try to relieve stress and do as well as they can on their finals. Traditional ways to relieve stress include exercise, good rest and time management.
“I make a list of everything I need to get done. Then, do them from smallest to most important,” says Sarah Smith, a GCSU student.
More contemporary ways to go about relieving stress can include watching comedy movies, or a centering activity like dancing, yoga and prayer.
“I’ve started doing yoga and that really helps me to feel relaxed,” says Jordan Patinkin, a GCSU student.
The GCSU library and Counseling Services are helping out by sponsoring stress relief sessions for students this week. The sessions are designed to be another option for students to help relieve stress during this time of the semester.
“I hope they will add just one more stress relieving tool on the tool belt of a student,” says Mary Jane Phillips, the director of Counseling Services.
Counseling services are also available on an individual basis. They can help students with their specific stressors and problems and come up with an effective management system. Counselors are available Monday through Friday from eight a.m. to five p.m. in Lanier hall room 122.
