Public Safety Incidents
Georgia College & State University has experienced two domestic disturbances in the last two weeks.
GCSU Public Safety Administrative Assistant Cindy Potts said, “the Campus Police reacted normally, but because of the Virginia Tech tragedy, I think we took it all a little more seriously.”
On Wednesday, April 18, GCSU employee Monica Cowart received a phone call in Atkinson Hall from her ex-husband Kevin Cowart. Kevin Cowart was threatening to come to Milledgeville to harm Monica’s current boyfriend. The GCSU Public Safety Department took care of the situation by taking Monica to an undisclosed safe location and closing Atkinson Hall temporarily.
The following Wednesday, April 25, the GCSU Public Safety Department received a phone call complaining that Wilmacaucus R. King, a black male, had entered Maxwell Student Union with a hand gun. King was immediately apprehended. Only a knife was found on King who was then taken to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department.
Public Safety Director Ken Vance said, “You can’t dismiss the height of awareness. We responded the way we normally would have, but there definitely was a raised awareness.”
Because of the Virginia Tech tragedy, a lot of college campuses are rethinking their safety procedures, and their emergency plans. GCSU is also rethinking their procedures as well.
Vance thinks that GCSU is moving in the right direction.
“We should have a tailored management system that contacts students and faculty in emergency situations. I am confident we will have that by the fall,” said Vance.
