Good Deeds Recognized

Hands on Milledgeville, a community volunteer center and newest addition to the Georgia College and State University, announces the winner of the first annual Favorite Philanthropist competition.
Denise Chambers, a senior art therapy major at GCSU, was voted Favorite Philanthropist by her peers.
“Denise is one of the nicest people I know here at GCSU,”said Daniel Strassburger, a sophomore psychology major. “Her number one concern has always been her philanthropy projects. She strikes me as a truly altruistic person worthy of some special treatment of her own.”
Although it was no surprise to her classmates, Chambers was shocked when she won.
“I cried like a baby. I wanted to say something to show the other competitors the many different leadership ways that are out there, but my emotions took over,” Chambers said. “I was so emotional because I learned so much about myself, my competitors, and the G.I.V.E. Center.”
As winner of the Favorite Philanthropist competition, Chambers received $1,200 to give to the charity of her choice. She donated the money to the Adopt-A-Grandparent Program.
“The Adopt-A-Grandparent Program is looking forward to having a Senior Prom and funds are low. I’m not going to lie, the reward was a big motivation to help with the funds,” said Chambers.
The Favorite Philanthropist competition was loosely based on the reality television show “The Apprentice.” Four students were chosen to compete in non-profit and volunteer management challenges. These challenges included recruiting people to volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters, finding an assistant, holding an event at Relay for Life, raising $150 in two weeks, and getting fellow students to vote for them as Favorite Philanthropist.
