Spring Break tips

It’s that time of year again. The temperature is rising while our patience for college classrooms is shrinking fast. Spring break is almost here. Only a few days separate GCSU students from that trip to paradise or at least the closest equivalent on our budgets.

Students around the country get together each spring in places like Panama City, Daytona Beach, or even exotic locales in the Bahamas or Mexico. They get to have some fun and be a little wild along the way. Foreign countries are popular because of the unique experience. You can mingle with other cultures and bask on beautiful beaches.

"Cancun has a great vibe because everybody is having a good time," said junior marketing major, Martin Gogliormella. "With the beach and friends, you can make your own fun."

Hot spots in Florida and Mexico await those wanting to spend the holiday closer to the sparkling blue Gulf Coast than the murky lake waters of Milledgeville.

Students traveling this year have more to think about than beaches and sun. There are tips to make sure spring break is unforgettable for the right reasons.

Spring breakers traveling abroad should take some precautions to make the best of the trip. The Bureau of Consular Affairs has some reminders for students.

According to their tip brochure, "Before departing, take time to do some research about the people and their culture, and any problems that the country is experiencing that may affect your travel plans."

In addition, the U.S. State Department keeps details on common scams and crimes for 170 countries. Knowing the local laws and customs could prevent police issues. In these areas, students should avoid carrying large amounts of cash or personal items like iPods. These actions can draw unwanted attention.

Another problem common to countries like Mexico is bad drinking water.

"You have to avoid the tap water or you will get sick," Gogliormella said.

Foreign trips require some additional precautions, but there are universal tips for all spring breakers. This is a time to relax without regretting your actions two weeks later.

Alcohol is a staple of spring break. Regardless of age, people can get their hands on it. Unfortunately, alcohol is involved in most accidents, crimes, and deaths suffered by students.

With the heat, dehydration and alcohol poisoning are real threats. Dehydration might be coming if you feel dizzy or weak. Signs of alcohol poisoning include bluish skin, confusion, and irregular breathing. If you drink, try to mix every few with some water or other non-alcoholic beverage. Knowing your limit could save you some headaches.

According to an American Medical Association survey, 83 percent of college age women admitted to excess drinking on spring break. Over 40 percent regretted blacking out and not remembering anything.

With alcohol comes a jump in sexual activity. Spring breakers should be aware of the health risks that can ruin the party. Whether drinking or not, everyone should look out for one another. This is important for all female groups or any students in unfamiliar surroundings.

Kelly Harrigan, a junior exercise science major, remembers a trip to the Bahamas two years ago. A friend suffered a serious injury after she wandered away from their group.

"It’s really important to stay in groups when you go out," Harrigan said. "You’ve got to be cautious and think things through."

Spring break gives students a chance to forget about their responsibilities for a few days. These pointers could help make the experience more enjoyable. Think about your actions this spring.

One decision could make the difference between the regrettable and the amazing memory.
