WGUR Grand Opening

    WGUR celebrated their semester grand opening last Wednesday by offering t-shirts, free food, and Frisbees. Brian Grooms, general manager of GCSU’s radio station, said they were excited to introduce new staff and equipment.
    WGUR offers music, talk shows and news that cater to GCSU students.  Grooms said students from all majors have the chance to get on the air and talk about what interests them.
    “Students have the ability to play and talk about what they want,” he said.  “They have creative control.”
    Grooms said WGUR offers a wide variety of music including classic rock, techno, country, Christian and Spanish.  The station introduced some new DJs this semester, one of them being senior Mike King, co-host of “Sports Talk.”
    King, a mass communication major with a double concentration in telecommunication and print, said the show focuses on local and national sports.  Some topics include Bobcat soccer and Falcons football.
    “Sports Talk” offers music as well.  King said some of the music genres are alternative and classic rock.
    “We play a little bit of everything,” he said, “but I stick to the rock field.”
    “Sports Talk” airs every Tuesday and Thursday from three until four p.m.
    Ashley Drummond, senior public relations and advertising major, helps raise awareness of WGUR.  She said t-shirt sales, DJ spotlights, fliers and chalking help raise money for the radio station.
    “We try to get people to listen to the shows,” she said.
    Drummond worked at WGUR last semester for practicum credit, but decided not to stop helping out.
    “This year’s for fun,” she said.
