Lady Bobcats lose 71-66 to Lady Lakers on Homecoming

The GCSU Lady Bobcats lost to 17th ranked Clayton State University 71-66 in a heartbreaker on Homecoming Day. The Lady Bobcats entered the game 16-6 overall, 7-4 in conference play. Clayton State University Lady Lakers entered the game 18-4 overall, 8-3 in conference play.

Junior Marquita Driskell led the team with 24 points and 10 rebounds and junior forward Ashley Williams led the team in rebounds with 14 rebounds.

The Lady Bobcats jumped out to an early lead in the beginning of the game, leading by as much as 11 points. But after strong defense and forced turnovers, the Lady Lakers came back to finish the half on top 26-22.

“To me where the game was actually lost was the last eight minutes of the first half,” Coach Carrick, head women’s basketball coach, said. “(In) the last eight minutes of the first half we didn’t have a basket until Marquita made a layup in the last 30 seconds, so we went (nearly) eight minutes without scoring a basket in the first half.”

“We’re very disappointed. We play to win.”

The second half seemed to belong to Clayton State as they built on their halftime lead and they seemed to have the game locked up until the Lady Bobcats stormed back. With rebounding from Williams and three pointers from junior Elisha Lynch in the remaining two minutes GCSU cut their deficit to as little as three points. But the Lady Lakers made their final seven out of eight free throws to hold on to the victory.

“We played really hard. We kept the intensity and we really wanted to win,” Driskell said. “You have to give them their credit. Both teams played really hard.”

The Lady Bobcats face Armstrong Atlantic State University in conference play on Wednesday night at 5:30 pm.

Clayton State is also ranked #1 in the Top 10 poll for the South Atlantic Region. GCSU is ranked #9.
