GCSU Women Escape Saints Comeback
The women’s basketball team avenged a loss to North Georgia College & State University earlier in the season with an 81-76 win at the Centennial Center on Feb. 3.
GCSU lost in Dahlonega, GA on Dec. 2 in the final seconds, 73-71, on a jumper by Kourtney Singleton. The Lady Bobcats were determined to not let things slip away again and remain unbeaten at home.
“They beat us by two at their place and it was crucial that we come out and win this one,” junior Marquita Driskell said. “We take pride in the fact that we are unbeaten at home and we wanted to keep it that way.”
GCSU started off the game strong going on a 9-3 run and would keep that lead edging the Lady Saints 37-32 at halftime.
The lady Bobcats would establish a lead in the second half on the strength of a 12-3 run beginning at 15:21 remaining in the game.
The Lady Saints would fight back and try to steal the show once again. With 6:05 remaining in the game, NGCSU began a 17-8 run to bring them within three points but Driskell would step up and lead GCSU to victory.
“Coach told me to go out and take charge and so I did,” Driskell said.
In the final two minutes Driskell scored ten points to keep the game out of reach.
Driskell finished the day with 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
“I keep telling ‘Quita’ to shoot the thing,” head coach John Carrick said. “She is always reluctant to shoot and wants to pass it to the outside.”
The Lady Bobcats move to 9-0 at home and 5-3 in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC). GCSU battles against the Lady Cougars of Columbus State University on Wednesday, Feb. 7 for first place in the north division of the PBC.
