Students proved worth, resolve
Dear Editor,
On Tuesday night we were dealt a blow that will no doubt hurt many of you for years to come.
Last night, the City Council unanimously passed the limit of non-blood related people that could live in a house to three. This hits home to each one of us, to the sororities, the fraternities and to the other students who just like the idea of walking to and from class.
Now we are forced to find places further out and likely have to pay higher rents as the demand for these few places left will go through the roof. But to say we only lost last night is a severe misunderstanding.
Last night we were defeated but to get it to the point where we were at was wonderful. I was able to speak last night – just as I was at the Planning and Zoning meeting, where we won. I just wanted to make sure that all the students know how much I am thankful for all the support they showed to me and this cause over the past two months.
Anybody who came out, I am grateful you did.
A few people deserve little more recognition. Will Thompson was the creator of this little group which organized the movement against this ordinance, and I was greatful enough to be brought into the fold. Robert Buckley worked hard behind the scenes to try and help me perfect my speech, get me quotes, and find me a study that was invaluable.
A few professors who I’ll keep nameless: you guys know who you are and all the great things you did for me and the students. Thank you.
Lastly I do want to speak about Mark Pelton. His slanderous comments last night were those that were unbecoming of a faculty member.
I have no issue with anybody who opposed the ordinance; however, I do take issue with those that choose to paint students in the slanderous nature in which he did. I hope this university takes a look at your comments or at least you issue some semblance of an apology.
All I want to say in closing is that, I’m sorry to all the students for this passing; we fought hard. In politics it’s not always what you know, but who you know, and that’s what we fell victim to here this week. We just didn’t know the right people; we had the facts on our side. I’m a graduating senior in May, so to all the underclassmen, I hope you guys keep fighting, and don’t let these next two years fly by without making it difficult. Thanks again for all the support!
Sincerely,
