A meaningless double major?
Dear Editor,
I graduated as a Summer candidate last May. This Fall I enrolled here at GCSU as a graduate student in history, upon completion of my undergraduate classes in Summer II.
I was told I would receive my undergraduate diplomas in the mail. You see, I double-majored. I earned degrees in theatre performance and also in history. Imagine my surprise when that long awaited envelope arrived in my mailbox. AT LAST! My diplomas to hang on the wall!
After five years of hard work and thousands of dollars, my declarations of achievement had arrived. I opened the "DO NOT FOLD" envelope and pulled out ONE crisp white diploma.
Not only did I receive just ONE diploma, after spending an extra year, and over two thousand dollars to complete a second major, but GC&SU diplomas do not specify your degree. We are all segregated simply by B.A. and B.S.
My parents’ diplomas use frivolous language like "forestry" and "nursing". What a waste of ink. Why would you ever want anyone to know what you earned your college degree in?
Thank you Georgia College & State University for keeping that information private. I never want anyone to realize I studied theatre and then earned another degree in history! I can now hide this shame with only a modicum of difficulty.
P.S. Parking in Milledgeville is still like trying to successfully conduct a land war in Asia, and college students should never be instructed to park in a well lighted secure parking lot (Irwin St.) separated from their dorms by an unlit, unsecure park and a state highway! Does anyone watch the news?
P.P.S. Thanks to The Colonnade for providing this voice to the students and faculty, Bravo!
Sincerely,
John Hurley
