RHA hosts costume contest

Decorated with Halloween balloons and spider webs, Magnolia Ballroom was the site of the Residence Hall Association’s “Freaky Friday” party, held Friday, Oct. 13, 8 p.m.-midnight.
Sophomore Chemistry major and member of RHA, Karla White said that the organization leads the residence halls and has a big impact on a student’s transition from home to college.
“RHA sets the pace for what students can expect each school year- loads of fun and great opportunities,” White said.
White said that the party was put on to promote the organization to the GCSU community.
“They decided to have the party to make people more aware of RHA’s involvement on this campus and (their) desire to foster a living-learning community campus-wide,” White said.
Sophomore Andrwea Judy was the event coordinator, though the party was put on by RHA as a whole,.
“Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I just thought it would be really fun to have a dance on Friday the 13th because that doesn’t happen in October that often,” Judy said. “I just thought it would be kind of cool to have a dance, and costumes are always fun.”
There were about 25 people in attendance, which is good for a Friday night event when many students leave for the weekend. Judy said that they weren’t event expecting that many people.
“We had a pretty big turnout from what we were expecting and the costume contest went well,” Judy said. “We were hoping for a lot people, but we kept our expectations low.”
Students were dressed in costumes from devils to witches. The costume contest was won by a pair of students dressed as Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf disguised as the grandmother.
Students also danced to different types of music such as hip-hop, country and techno.
Leslie Pittman, a junior who was dressed as a gypsy, said she enjoyed herself.
“I am having fun, I love to dance, and I’m glad I’m here with my friends,” Pittman said.
Junior international business major Jessica Bean thought the party was fun as well.
“I think it’s great,” Bean said. “A lot of people went out of town this weekend, so it’s nice that they had something for the people that stayed.”
Freshman accounting major Marcus Green said the party was pretty fun for a Friday night.
“It was fun for the people who were there, and it was something for people to do on a Friday night.”
White thought the party was an opportunity for the organization to become more visible.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for RHA to let the campus see that it is really active, and it really wants students to be involved,” White said.
Resident Assistant Paul Grigsby said that it was a good idea for RHA to throw the party.
“It was a good event for a Friday because there wasn’t much going on,” Grigsby said. “I think they put on a quality program for a weekend event.”
