WESPY Awards
Coach of the Year
Chris Calciano: In his first season as the Baseball Head Coach, he led the Bobcats to a number one ranking in the nation, the team’s third time in the No. 1 spot in school history and the first time since 2002. The team (39-7) currently is first place in the Peach Belt Conference.
Player of the Year
Jeremy Mayweather: Mayweather, a senior, led the team to a Peach Belt Conference regular season title averaging 13 points per game with 10 double doubles. He was named PBC Player of the Year. He also earned All-Region and All-American Honors and was selected to play in the Inaugural NCAA Division II/National Association of Basketball Coaches Men’s All-Star Game.
Best Comeback
Women’s Basketball Team: The Lady Bobcats finished the season 14-13, and seeded fifth in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The ladies won three straight games, knocking off four seed Armstrong Atlantic, top seed Clayton State, and six seed Francis Marion in double overtime, to win the conference tournament.
Most Improved Team
Men’s Basketball Team: The Bobcats entered the 2005-2006 with disappointing results from the previous year. GCSU went 13-15 overall and 5-11 in the Peach Belt Conference in the 2004-2005 season. They completely turned around this season, winning the regular season conference title at 22-9 and 16-4 in the PBC. The team also reached the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament.
Most Persistent Team
Men’s Tennis Team: After losing their number one man, Erick Siqueira, the Bobcats conquered adversity, finishing the season fourth in the conference and ranked 22nd in the country.
Most Enthusiastic Fan
The Thundercats: The group of rude and obnoxious students stationed on the frontline of each basketball home game helped the Bobcats grab a home record of 9-2.
Rising Star
Libby Kidd: The sophomore earned PBC player of the week in February. She went 19-6 in the regular season with an ERA of 1.54, 19 complete games and six shutouts.
