WGUR hosts Open Mic Night
Bobcat Village hosted the complex’s first Open Mic Night last Tuesday evening as a way to get students to “show their stuff,” and earn a chance to win great prizes, including studio recording time and radio airplay.
Performances ranged from solo singers to guitarists to a cappella and more.
Twelve students entered to perform, however only 9 showed up. Contestants were allowed to perform original songs and any covers that were played were not judged. Each performer was given a maximum of 10 minutes to “show their stuff,” and the event concluded after almost three hours at approximately 9:40 p.m.
The winners of the competition were Ruel Lee, in first place and Martin Wattenbarger, in second place, received studio time at Z-97.7 FM to record a professional track, and they works will also recieve radio airplay of their original songs.
Wattenbarger, a senior economics major, describes himself as an acoustic guitarist, and said he couldn’t find a reason not to participate in the event.
“I’ll be playing two originals,” said Wattenbarger. “I love to play and figured, ‘Why not?’ I also wanted to see if people would like my music.”
The event took place in front of the Bobcat Village clubhouse and more than 60 students showed up to illustrate their support and listen to live music.
Senior English major Andrew Madden was among the crowd, doing just that.
“I’m out here to support my best friend and I like listening to live music,” said Madden.
Along with a variety of free music and entertainment, popcorn, cotton candy and fruit punch was available for onlookers.
Z-97.7 FM’s Phillip Joiner was live on sight along with GCSU’s MBC 4 News. Several raffle prizes were also drawn for those who have signed leases to live in Bobcat Village next year. Prizes included a reserved parking space on main campus and at Bobcat Village, and Travis Boyd was the winner of that prize.
Audra Davidson Foundation won $500 worth of CatCash, Christina Gomez was the recipient of free textbooks for the fall 2006 semester and Alexander M. Smith won a high-end bike from Oconee Outfitters. Other prizes included an unlimited meal plan with a $100 CatCash allowance, which Steven Yue won, and the main prize, a Dell laptop, was raffled off to lucky winner-Justin Bartuska.
All prizes will be available for pick up and rewarded in August.
Michael Haun, director of Marketing for Auxiliary Services, was in charge of organizing and setting up Open Mic night.
“From my perspective, the event was outstanding. Working with the wonderful staff at Z-97 FM was great,” said Haun. “The students at GCSU are so talented and this was just another stage for them to show their stuff. The focus of the event was to just have a fun social activity and we wanted to design an event around the drawing. This is just one of many social events that University Housing plans.”
