Ladies rise to the top
The GCSU Lady Bobcats put an achin’ on the University of South Carolina Aiken Pacers Wednesday, April 5 as the team prepares for the upcoming Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament.
“I feel really good about that,” said Ginger Miller, head coach of the Lady Bobcat softball team. “We are definitely a good tournament team. We’ve proven that in the past; we’ve played in quite a few tournaments this season, so we’re ready to go play. We’ve beaten everybody in the Peach Belt at least one time so far.”
The Bobcats, 12-4 in the PBC, proved they are ready for anything with a sweep of the double header against USC Aiken, whose PBC record is only 3-13.
The first game began roughly as Libby Kidd, sophomore right handed pitcher for the Lady Bobcats, gave up a run in the 1st inning.
“That’s how I work sometimes. I just get the bad innings out of the way, and I know that I can come back,” Kidd said.
And she was right.
Kidd held USC back until Diana Baruffa, shortstop, and Keidra Baitley, infield, hit back-to-back homeruns, putting GCSU back into the game. The team got lucky, scoring in the bottom of the 7th as GCSU’s Aundrea Baker scored from second base on a failed pick off attempt to win the game. The final score in the first game was 3-2.
The second game of the double header began similarly as the Bobcats gave up two runs in the top of the first inning. However, Baitley stepped up to the plate again and hit a three run homer. The team ran away with the game from there wining 7-3
“I’m excited that I hit them,” was all Baitley said about her two homeruns after the games.
The fans even got to see a good coach vs. umpire fight during the second game, resulting in Miller almost being ejected from the game.
“He didn’t make a call that I agreed with, and so I went out and chatted with him,” Miller said. “I was just making an argument for my girls. He didn’t agree with me and he got angry.”
The team shook it off and split a doubleheader with PBC powerhouse Augusta State April 11. The team still has a good shot at winning the conference.
“Our plan is to come out and have good pitching like we’ve had, be able to put the ball into play and play solid defense, which we have all year.”
