The Sports Guy

GCSU Athletics has made leaps and bounds this season, with almost each sport posting high rankings and being at the top of the Peach Belt Conference. This is only a reflection of the first-class program that the athletic department exemplifies. The program not only stresses athletic excellence, but also academic excellence.

Behind the sweat, time and effort sacrificed are the superb academic credentials of our school’s athletes. GCSU has placed a school-record of 67 student-athletes on the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll, which requires a GPA of 3.0 or better for an entire academic year. The Women’s Tennis team led all school sports with a perfect 100 percent, as all seven Lady Bobcat players made more than a 3.0 GPA . Men’s Tennis followed the women with 80 percent, with eight of ten players making the honor roll. The overall GPA for all GCSU sports this year was 2.8, and 13 student-athletes had a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring semester.

This shows that GCSU Athletics gives students many options to start a future in business or athletics. A prime example of this testimony is Alumnus Jay Torrence. Last weekend, Torrence teamed up with Auburn University graduate Bud Cox to win the doubles championship at the inaugural Fila Cup Alumni Doubles Challenge last weekend. The tournament took place during the NASDAQ-100 Open at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park and was ran by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Each of the alums college varsity tennis programs received financial donations from Fila. Torrence accomplished high honors at GCSU, being named an ITA Division II All-America n Georgia Tennis Association Player of the Year in ’94 and was an All-PBC selection. He now works for the North American Mission Board.

This proves that GCSU is a perfect place for young athletes to build a promising future.
