Students treat professors to pie
Gamma Sigma Sigma hosted their annual “Pie Your Professor” event last Thursday on front campus.
The event raised $218 dollars, all of which went to Relay For Life, whose proceeds go directly to programs and research for the American Cancer Society.
Denise Chambers, a junior Art & Health Education major, collected money and helped rally for the event all day Thursday.
“This is a great way to get people excited about the fight against cancer,” said Chambers.
The pies that were used were actually made from shaving cream, which was pilled high on paper plates. Participants were allowed to choose which professor they pied in the face and could use any technique. Some students chose to stand at a distance and launch the pie towards their teacher, while others walked right up and smeared the pie in their teacher’s face.
Professors were allowed to cover their clothes with towels and use protective eye goggles while standing behind a wooden caricature cut- out, which had holes for their faces to show through.
Twelve professors volunteered to sacrifice their faces for this event. Those 12 included: Richard Mercier, John D. Cox, Dr. Renee Fontenot, Noland White, Gregory J. Jarvie, Jim Lidstone, Mike Gleason, Bruce Harshbarger, Jennifer M. Flory, Stephen Auerbach, Macon McGinley and Chris Hendley.
Jarvie, a professor of psychology, raised a total of $45 dollars during the event, coming in a close second behind White, an assistant professor of psychology who totaled $46 dollars in donations and pies combined. McGinley, an assistant professor of mass communication, was also very close in the running, bringing in $42 dollars for Relay For Life.
“I love everyone and we have the best students in Baldwin County,” said Jarvie. “They should have fed us though, where’s the real pie?”
Some students were able to leave class to go to the, “Pie Your Professor,” event. Crystal Bracewell, senior psychology major, was among the many students who showed up to pie White in the face.
“I didn’t do it to get back at Dr. White for anything,” said Bracewell. “I did it for the cause. I’ve always been big on supporting cancer research.”
Gamma Sigma Sigma looks forward to next years “Pie Your Professor,” event where the motto is always, “Revenge is sweet and so is pie.”
