Islam’s worst enemy is not the West, but itself
Dear Editor,
Ideas, even offensive ones, should never be limited and must always be tolerated. Most people in the West regard the cartoons as offensive, but personal beliefs have nothing to do with the right to publish ideas. What really concerns me is that not only are the protests against the cartoons misdirected and violent, they illustrate a deep unwillingness in the Muslim world to critically evaluate themselves.
Why are there no protests when young men destroy thousands of human beings in suicide attacks in the name of Islam? Is this not an offense to Islam? What about the anti-Semitic content in Middle-Eastern newspapers? Is this not also the same offense to which the protesters are violently voicing their grievances? There seems to be an intolerant, double-standard and an avoidance of reality.
In the end, it appears that Islam’s worst enemy is not the West but itself. Islam’s current leaders are suffocating reasons while fanning the flames of violent radicalism. The true peaceful core of the religion, most likely supported by the vast majority of Muslims, is not emerging at the detriment of all of humanity.
Sincerely,
Stephen Geist
