Bobcat has more amenities than given credit for

Dear Editor,

First, I wanted to thank you guys for helping us communicate with students better and all the hard work and long hours you guys put in. I also respect the right of the press to do stories that they think will be of most interest to the students.

However, I wanted to voice my displeasure at the coverage of Bobcat Village in the article “Stipulations outweighed by apartment perks” in Aubrey Koscelski’s article in the March 24 edition.

I would expect at least equal coverage for each complex (the Grove, Bobcat Village, and Magnolia Park) so that students could make their choice on facts, not necessarily on a marketing campaign. As it turns out, the text of the article was exclusively about the two new complexes with incomplete and inaccurate information listed about Bobcat Village in the 2006 Apartment Comparison chart. Further, we were not even contacted to provide further information about Bobcat Village.

As The Colonnade has noted before, the gates are up at Bobcat Village due to student demand so it is no longer a gated community.

In the apartment comparison chart, many amenities were omitted. For instance Bobcat Village has a full-court basketball area, a sand volleyball area, a future car wash area, a convenience store to open in fall, emergency notification buttons with direct links to Public Safety in each room, and not just one fitness room, but a fitness room in each building for a total of six fitness rooms – one showcase fitness room and five satellite rooms.

As an update, the flooring has been put down in each of the six fitness rooms. Mirrors have also been placed on fitness room walls and flat screen TVs have been purchased for each room (being bid at the state level now). The fitness equipment (top-of-the-line equipment; same as at the Wellness Depot) is scheduled to arrive in June. All in all, this is a $250,000 project and we expect students to be very pleased. Also, in response to student demand for a car wash area, plans are underway to install a hose system with Bobcat Card swipe access as a means to curtail water waste. The car wash service will be free, and once you swipe your card, you will activate the water for around 15 minutes (additional free 15-minute periods are available, again for free, with additional swipes). This automatic shut off feature will save water. Auxiliary Services has even spoken to Sodexho about the possibility of selling a car wash package at the convenience store, complete with soap, a sponge, and a bucket.

Again, we are working very hard to provide the very best for students, and the truth of the matter is that like the dining hall and the bookstore, Bobcat Village is part of the university, which means all revenue it generates does not go to an out-of-state corporation like the Grove and Magnolia Park, but it stays right here to be reinvested in student services.

I am thankful for our working relationship and would even welcome critical articles if the time comes that we do not act in the students’ best interest, but I would request that a more thorough job be done to fairly represent our own GCSU student services.

Respectfully,
Mike Haun
Marketing Manager
GCSU Auxiliary Services
