Why do left-wingers try to ‘shock’ Americans?

Dear Editor,

I would like to respond to Mr. Shreve’s latest letter to the editor (“The hypocrisy of President Bush” in the March 3 issue of The Colonnade) by first pointing out that no one’s political views have ever disturbed my sleep. While I am steadfast in my belief that everyone has the right to hold their own opinions, I do question why the far left seems intent on pushing its extreme social agenda, in an effort to excite a “shock” effect on ordinary Americans. Trying to see how many people you can offend is no basis for a political platform. This is all the leaders of the far left have done at this point. Shreve offers his “sincere appreciation to Mr. Cheney,” for steadily strengthening his position. I can only assume he is referring to the hunting accident in which Mr. Cheney accidentally shot a fellow hunter. Accidents of this type are not uncommon on bird hunts. Everyone who’s been on a dove field has been peppered at some time or another. If this is the left’s most effective means to attack Mr. Cheney, they are woefully unprepared to be an effective political force in 2008.

Mr. Shreve goes on to say that he does not believe in appeasement. He states that we hastily went into Iraq, as if President Bush woke up one morning, decided Saddam Hussein was a threat, and launched an invasion that afternoon! We tried diplomacy for over TEN YEARS only to be undermined by European nations, hoping to line their pockets by violating the United Nations economic sanctions. Situation: A dangerous militant nation, that has produced and used weapons of mass destruction, threatens our national security. A 10 year program of diplomacy and international economic sanctions fail to create any change. What’s your next move Mr. Shreve? Military action or more failed diplomacy? What you are advocating is appeasement, pure and simple!

The problem with liberals in this country is that they have relegated themselves to a group of old men sitting in a barber shop, talking about how bad things are going and how much better things were way back when. Old men in barber shops make good points occasionally and are always fun to listen to, but they never come up with any realistic solutions to real problems. Liberals criticize everything the administration does, yet fail to offer any solutions to the problems it attempts to address. Why would the American people support a political platform that purports to deal with problems by simply opposing proposed solutions offered by their political rivals?

Liberals rarely even have anything new to complain about! The 2000 election was six years ago. Gore lost! Get over it! Conservatives gained Congressional seats in 2000. Maybe they “stole” them huh? In more recent history, Bush won the popular vote in 2004, largely due to the hostile takeover of the Democratic Party by the far-left, which alienated the moderate swing voters that comprise the majority of American voters.

I would like to further point out that I did not call all politically active young people juvenile. Calling the President a “douchebag” is juvenile! It seems to me that a good portion of the GCSU student body is fed up with the constant liberal rhetoric! If offering a counter-viewpoint makes me a “neo-McCarthyan”, so be it! Leftists, in the tradition of Stalin, Hitler, and Mao Tse-Tung, have a hard time with counter-viewpoints, so your sharp response is only natural. I will also remind the readers that the Democratic Party was the machine that created and enforced segregation in the South. Finally, sir, if you are insinuating that all Georgians who value Christianity, the Constitution, and patriotism are simple-minded, racist Klansmen, I have no need to further justify my point in the previous article. Your words serve to alienate 90 percent of all Georgians from your views.

In most sincere humility,
Ian McMullen
