The Voice

With the recent visit from New York Times Senior Writer Tamar Lewin, we are reminded how lucky we are at GCSU to have such a great relationship with one of the world’s most powerful, internationally-ranked newspapers.
Through GCSU’s Coverdell Institute and the American Democracy Project, not only does the New York Times provide us with phenomenal speakers, it also provides us with daily newspapers and gives students and faculty multiple opportunities to discuss articles each week in conjunction with the Times Talk program.
Every week students and faculty meet to discuss an article from the New York Times. The article is selected by a faculty member, who is also the leader of the discussion. Each week features a new faculty member, and the faculty members come from a variety of disciplines. And if that’s not enough, the New York Times is also generous enough to provide us with pizza at each Times Talk.
The program serves as a gateway to better student-faculty interaction while provoking the school’s liberal arts mission, helping students to delve deeper into today’s most important issues.
The New York Times is also used in many classes as a means to instigate discussion and debate, while further provoking GCSU’s liberal arts mission.
The Coverdell Institute was founded on Senator Paul Coverdell’s highly esteemed public service and addresses the Coverdell values of liberty, learning and leadership through public events and policy research. It serves as a resource to academic programs and student affairs.
The bottom line is that many schools are not fortunate enough to have this close relationship. Take advantage of the free New York Times conveniently delivered to campus each morning. Go speak your mind at the Times Talk discussions. Learn something new from the many speakers who come throughout the school year.
You only live once. Don’t let these opportunities pass you by.
