The Sports Guy
The Men’s and Women’s basketball season finished last week and to many students that marks the end of the Athletic season; I am going to give you four reasons to remain involved in GCSU athletics.
The first and the most exciting reason is the GCSU Baseball team. The team is currently ranked number two in the NCAA Division II Poll and is atop the Peach Belt Conference standings. The team’s slugging percentage is over .400 and their ERA is 2.18. Furthermore the team is outscoring opponents 194 runs to 97 and is 19-2 when scoring first.
The next reason to remain interested in the school’s athletics is the GCSU softball team. The team is currently ranked 13th in the nation and is second in the Peach Belt Conference standings. The team is batting over .300 and has an ERA of less than 2. The team is undefeated when scoring in the first inning and has outscored their opponents 176 to 69 so far this season.
The final two reasons are the Men and Women’s tennis teams.
The Men’s Tennis team is ranked 21st in the nation. One word that comes to mind to describe the team is determined. Even with their top player injured, Eric Siqueira, they continue to remain nationally ranked. Seniors Renato Oliveira and Brandon Lee are tearing through the opposition both in singles competition and as doubles partners. Oliveira is 8-3 in single matches and Lee is 11-3. The two are 10-2 in doubles matches.
The Women are ahead of the Men with a national ranking of 15th. All GCSU women have a win percentage of over .500 in both singles and doubles. I strongly urge everyone to go watch the GCSU tennis teams. It is the most exciting sport on campus to watch. The pace of the game is extremely fast and the strategy and communication of each team is intense.
