Homosexuality, abortion are misread
Dear Editor,
It’s sad to find that there are seniors, such as Amy Keith (regarding her article titled “Selfish arguers are hypocrites, bigots” in the March 3 edition of The Colonnade) at this school who are still narrow minded and unable to see the point of fighting for what you believe in.?
I read her letter and was outraged by the comments she made concerning homosexuality and abortion.? The letter was written with the premise of the rights granted us by the government, those being the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.? Apparently, according to Ms. Keith, no one needs more than life.? Taking this into consideration, I have a few questions for Ms.Keith.? If it is selfish to?fight for more than the right of Life, was it selfish for slaves to want freedom and for African-Americans to fight for Civil Rights in the 50s and 60s?? They were after all, alive and that should be enough right??
I think that although she listed “the pursuit of happiness” in her letter, Ms.Keith is totally missing the point of what that means.? If homosexuals are not permitted to marry the one they love, that is a breach of their pursuit of happiness.? Is it not?? Life is not simply about the ability to breathe, it’s about the quality of one’s life and quality of life is not defined by the ability to breathe, but the ability to experience life.?
As far as Ms.Keith’s attempt to compare abortion to withholding civil rights for the unborn, there is no comparison.? Despite the fact that there are a few women who use abortion as a form of birth control,?abortion is not always a selfish act.? In most cases, women choose to have an abortion because they feel unable to care properly for the child if they were to bring it into this world.? And then what?? To bring a helpless child into a world in which they cannot be properly cared for?is a greater wrong than aborting the child in the first place.? Ask yourself if you could handle the responsibility of a child and take good care of it right now?? Could you have done so five years ago??Everyone doesn’t have a family willing to help them take care of a child, and one of the most difficult things to do is to carry a child for nine months and then give it up for adoption.?
Before calling others bigots and hypocrites, maybe Ms.Keith should consider the circumstances of those individuals who do receive abortions. Ask yourself if you are willing to be the reason a child lacks quality of life.
Sincerely,
