Greek Week celebrates Greek life
It is time once again for the annual Greek Week at GCSU. Greek Week events will begin on Sunday, March 26 and end on Sunday, April 2.
“The point of Greek Week is about Greek unity, getting groups to come together and have fun, compete and play like kids,” said Ron Lunk, assistant director for Student Activities & Greek Life.
The week consists of different events each day. On Sunday there will be kickball and volleyball games located at the IM Complex. Monday will be the Delta Zeta Diamond Stud event and the Bed Race, a competition that allows teams to decorate a bed to a certain theme and race the beds at West Campus.
Tuesday will be the Tug-O-War and trivia events; Wednesday will be Fun n’ Games day, and Thursday the Can Serve-A-Thon will be held on front campus. For this event teams will use can goods to build structures that have significance to Milledgeville’s history. The cans will be donated to the Overview Food Pantry. The Can-Serve-a-thon is sponsored by The GIVE Center and Sodexho.
On Thursday a swimming event will be held; Friday will be the basketball competition, and Saturday will be the flag football event. Sunday, the last day of Greek Week, the Greek God/Goddess event will take place, along with the Greek Sing and Greek Step competition. For the Greek God/Goddess competition, each group selects one person to represent the group as a whole. Later that evening a cookout will be held and an awards ceremony will take place on front campus.
“These are all pretty traditional events for Greek Week at GC&SU,” Lunk said. “There are some new events and variations of the traditional activities. Money will be raised through the Penny War that will be an on-going event throughout the week. The money will also go to the Overview Food Pantry.”
This year Greek Week has more events than ever.
“I love Greek Week,” Lunk said. “Although the week can be stressful, it is really a nice break from the ordinary. It is a celebration of Greek life, which I truly enjoy.”
Parker Petrea has been a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity since fall of 2002, and he is also a co-chair for Greek Week.
“I am looking for a week of healthy competition and fun,” Petrea said. “It’s a great time for prospective Greek members to see how fun Greek life is.”
For the events, the sororities will compete against the other sororities while the fraternities compete against each other as well. However, there will be four co-ed events this year as well.
“I am really excited about the whole week,” Phi Mu member Danielle Dawson said. “It’s a great time to meet other Greeks and a time to bond with my sisters.”
During the awards ceremony, the overall winner of the Greek Week competition will be announced. The Greek Woman and Greek Man of the Year will also be announced.
“I hope that people will get to know the Greek community better and meet someone they haven’t before,” Lunk said. “This is a really great week – not just for the Greek community, but the GCSU community.”
