Men’s Tennis stays tough

The 11th ranked Men’s Tennis team lost a tough battle against second ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University last Wednesday, resulting in the team’s first loss of the season.

Despite injuries, the team started off this season strong, winning five of their first six matches. They blew through non-conference matches and picked up a big win against Augusta State last Monday.

“We are ranked high but there are also teams in our conference ranked higher than us,” said Head Coach Steve Barsby. “We are just trying to hold our position. It doesn’t get any easier. We just need to continue to play well.”

The team is short their strongest player, sophomore Erick Siqueira. He cracked his rib running sprints during practice and will be out for at least a month. The seniors on the team are trying to lead the team in Siqueira’s absence.

“After Siqueira became injured, coach pulled me aside and told me I had to step up and lead,” said senior Marcelo Ferreira. “I don’t mind the pressure, if that is what it takes to be successful.”

The team has responded well, picking up a win in their first conference match against Augusta State.

“We make the freshmen realize that it is not an easy thing being on the lineup,” said senior Mariano Cebrian. “I am happy with the number five and six guys, they have responded well.”

The team has some difficult tasks ahead of them facing ranked conference rivals Columbus State and Francis Marion this weekend.

“We just need to be solid,” Barsby said. “Nine times out of 10, the team that is more solid will win.”
