The Sports Guy

The past few weeks I have noticed that the section of the paper entitled “The Litter Box” has had an ongoing discussion over the popularity of the GC&SU basketball pep squad called Thundercats.

The comments posted in the Litter Box are more unpredictable than Georgia weather.

In the Feb. 10 issue, one student believed that the Thundercats were intrusive to their enjoyment of the game.

The student said, “I am extremely embarrassed that this is the type of school spirit that represents GC&SU.”

The student continued to question why the athletics department lets the students behave in such a manner.

In the subsequent issue, two members of the Thundercats retaliated. One student claimed that the members of the pep squad would not conform to the discontented wants.

“We will not sit down, we will not be silent, and we will be polite when the time calls for it,” they said.

Following that student’s comment, another student said that trash talking is a legendary part of all sports.

“Heckling or (crap) talking has been around almost as long as sports, in fact, I think sports were invented for guys to talk (crap) at each other,” he said.

These remarks began to make me think. I believe that the Thundercats should continue to make noise and act crazy.

The group provokes team spirit. The Bobcats play twice as well if someone is on the sidelines giving them support.

Also, the group has made an increase in game attendance. Honestly, do you believe half as many students would come to the game if there wasn’t such controversey surrounding this group? Some students come to the games just to see what they will do next. Love them or hate them they bring excitement to the game and increase home attendance.

Furthermore, I agree with the one student who commented that trash talking is a tradition of sports. Trash talking is and will always be a part of the game. How do you think rivalries were created? Rivalries give sports a whole new level of intensity. They add spice to the game and givesfans one more reason to get involved.

I don’t know about you, but I would rather watch a game with something on the line-like bragging rights.
