Ladies aim for the crown
The Lady Bobcats, 9-11, finished the season with a three game losing streak after Wednesday night’s 48-45 road loss against Lander.
With the Peach Belt Conference tournament approaching March 1-5 in Greenwood, S.C., the Lady Bobcats are working hard to prepare for the tournament.
Head Coach John Carrick said the morale of the team must be right when entering the conference tournament.
“You don’t get better because it’s tournament time,” Carrick said. “We’ll probably play in the tournament how we have played all year.”
Even though the Lady Bobcats are in the middle of the conference standings, their expectations are still at the top.
“(We want to) win everything and take the whole chocolate pie home,” Carrick said. “That’s been our goal since August.”
Carrick is optimistic about the chances the girls have in the tournament.
“To me, it’s a wide open tournament as to whoever’s peaking at the right time and the team that wants to win the most is just going to put all these things that will change your moods and focus out of your mind and focus in on (the) tournament and strictly (the) tournament- is going to win the tournament,” Carrick said.
Momentum is something that Carrick said his team could have as they work hard to play their best every game.
“I do like the fact that we’ve been putting forth a lot of energy and seem to be focused on the proper thing- winning, the game (itself and) playing together,” Carrick said. “We’re coming together at the right time.”
Players like Cassie Miliner and LaWanna Leon, who lead the team in defense and scoring, respectively, are going to be called on to lead the team into the tournament.
Assistant Coach Tabitha Vasilas said she agrees, but she is counting on the entire team to go into the tournament ready to play.
With the leadership role on the team, Leon said she still wants the entire team to do well and not just focus on her individual performance.
“I care about how the team performs in general, but I know that if I do what I’m supposed to do then it’ll also help the team out,” Leon said. “I plan on giving it my all and doing the simple things like rebound and play defense- all the simple things that we should have been doing from the (beginning). I hope we perform well.”
Leon said if she could choose a team to play it would be Clayton State, because Clayton defeated the Bobcats twice. Even as the number one seed, Leon said she’d still want to play them.
“I really want to beat them. If we do (play them), I (am going to) be ready for them, and I hope my team will be ready too,” Leon said.
If the Bobcats win the tournament championship, Vasilas said the next thing they will do is “go to practice.”
