Intramurals get intense
GC&SU students got a glimpse of March Madness with the intramural basketball tournament held last week in the Centennial Center.
Each league’s playoff bracket presented a different path to the winner. The Men’s A league tournament took a predictable course with the higher seeds progressing and the number one seed grabbing the championship trophy.
Student referee and junior Brandon Davis said the Men’s A league championship game between the Oreos and White Out was the most exciting in the playoffs. The game went into three overtimes, resulting in an Oreos 82-80 win and their third consecutive championship.
“They were two evenly matched teams who played their hearts out and it is a shame that we have to give the trophy to one team,” Davis said.
The Women’s tournament turned out similar to the Men’s A tournament. Most of the higher seeds dominated the brackets except for upsets by number seven seed Heir Jordan and the number five seed, 302 Homies. In the end, number one seed Red Bulls won all their games by more than 20 points, including the championship game where they defeated Second Wind 41-8.
The Men’s B bracket contained some thrilling upsets. The top seeds struggled to survive in the first round of the tournament. The number 16 seed, Drain-O, defeated the top seed, Shock and Awe, by 10 points with a final score of 46-36.
The second seed, POA, barely stayed alive by only beating the 15 seed, Team Blitzkreig, by one point. The 14 seed, Great White Hype, upset the third seed, Kappa Sigma B, with a final score of 37-28. The five seed, Filthy Pirates, also went home early, losing in the first round to the number 12 seed, Motorboaters, 53-33.
The four seed, Delta Phi, was the highest seed remaining in the tournament. The team’s road to the finals was a bit rocky. They had to come from behind in four games.
“At times it gets intense, but the rest of the team kept me from getting too outraged,” said center Scott Murray.
The six seed, Devils, also had some help from upsets in the tournament. The team’s toughest challenge was the number two seed, POA. The Devils beat POA to face Delta Phi in the championship.
“We have had some tough battles but we play hard as a team and just continue to stay confident and believe we are the best,” Guard Ryan Erwin said.
In the championship, Delta Phi went out to an early lead and went into half time leading 16-12. In the second half, the Devils came back to tie it at 30 with two minutes to go. Delta Phi held them off in the final two minutes, making crucial free throws to win the championship 34-32. Murray was excited to win the championship.
“We just worked hard, were determined, took a lot of hook shots, and believed in the system,” Murray said.
