GIVE Center honors Dr. Seuss
The Georgia College & State University Involved in Volunteer Efforts (GIVE) Center will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2 by hosting many events on the GC&SU campus.
The ninth annual Read Across America Day, sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA) and Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P., will also be held March 2. On this day, millions of readers will be in the company of a good book. Read Across America Day is annually celebrated on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. This day allows our nation to focus more on motivating children to read.
“I am very excited about this event because I think it will be a fun and exciting way to get the community and college involved with combating illiteracy,” said junior and Dr. Seuss event co-coordinator Nadirah Ross. “I think the elementary school students as well as the readers will really enjoy it.”
This is a day to help promote literacy by reading to children in the Milledgeville community. Faculty, staff and students of GC&SU as well as community volunteers will serve as celebrity readers and go into all five Baldwin County elementary schools to read to various classes. The GIVE Center’s goal is to read to every child from kindergarten to fifth grade on March 2. The five elementary schools in Baldwin County are: John Milledge Academy, Creekside, Eagle Ridge, Midway and Blandy Hills.
This will be the first year Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America day have been celebrated to this extent through GC&SU, although in previous years students have participated in volunteer reading on this day.
“We are hoping this event will motivate GC&SU students to get involved and read with other literacy endeavors,” said Kendall Stiles, GIVE Center founder and director. “Recently The GIVE Center has partnered with State Farm Insurance to provide volunteers for their already existing reading and literacy programs.”
The GIVE Center is also having a fundraiser called Bucks for Books to increase the collection of children’s books in the Ina Dillard Russell Library for education majors. The GIVE Center is trying to collect new or gently used books from the community. Any children’s books are accepted, but hard back books are preferred. Any monetary donations arealso welcome.
This March would have been Dr. Seuss’ 102 birthday, and GC&SU will host a celebration in honor of his birthday in the Ina Dillard Russell Library on campus that will be open to all students, faculty, staff and community visitors to come eat cake, celebrate and bring book donations.
“I’m so pumped about this event. I hope this event will catch on so we can add books to the library and also add reading and literacy awareness,” said Sara Johnson, SGA president and Dr. Seuss event co-coordinator. “It is very important to read to kids, so being a part of this event is so rewarding. I have already talked to so many people that are excited about this event.”
