The Voice

To Shreve or not to Shreve, that is the question.

Receiving more E-mails for Brian Shreve’s recent columns “A bigot’s guide to 2006″ and “The ‘true’ State of the Union address” than any other editorial we’ve ever published before has made us more knowledgeable about the provocation of our readership. We understand the rattling of beliefs and the steps to judgment many have been forced to take in light of reading his column.

The Colonnade office is as diverse in individuality as the GC&SU campus itself, and no, we don’t all agree with what Shreve writes. But none of us discount his contribution to the paper through the button-pushing and mind-wringing that his weekly columns provide. We want you to be angry. We want you to be moved. We encourage action. We want you to think.

To “Shreve,” as The Colonnade has come to know it, is to promote the most radical opinion for the purpose of urging a counter argument. Debate has the power of correcting our misgivings and strengthening our beliefs. Anybody who believes that Shreve’s articles have no bearing in this direction has grossly underestimated Shreve’s ‘Shreving ability.’ There is no malice in opinion, only pure inquisitive thought.

We encourage people with a voice to step forward and let it be heard. Your political party makes no difference to us. Our job is pure objectivity to your stance on abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, war and politics. Columns are welcome on the existence or nonexistence of God, Atlantis, or even the Loch Ness Monster. This is the ultimate message that Shreve sends to you every week in his column, and one that you should be hearing.

Thank you to everyone who cared enough to write to us concerning his columns. While not every response can be published every one was certainly appreciated.

The only way to respond to a Shreve is with a Shreve. We Shreve. Do you?
